In November 2016, Washington voters passed a paid leave law covering businesses operating within Washington State to offer paid sick leave to all employees. Paid sick time means an employee’s absence from work due to mental or physical illness, injury or health condition to accommodate the employee’s need for medical diagnosis, care, or treatment of mental or physical illness, injury or health condition or an employee’s need for preventive medical care. The law goes into effect on January 1, 2018.
Businesses operating within Washington State are required to provide paid sick leave and paid safe time to their workers. This resource document outlines the basic provisions of the Washington Paid Sick Leave law.
