The Art of Difficult Conversations

Course Description

Most people aren’t taught how to handle tough conversations at work, so they avoid them or say the wrong thing. This can lead to bigger issues: unresolved tension, disengaged employees, and costly HR problems. Difficult conversations don’t get easier with time. Instead, they get better with the right tools and practice.

This interactive workshop will teach you how to engage in difficult conversations effectively. You will draft specific words to use and make a plan in case the conversation doesn’t go as expected. With these tools, you will meet difficult conversations with confidence and clarity.

Please Note: This course includes material that overlaps with another Archbright University course, Conflict to Collaboration. Participants are advised to register for one of these courses, as it is not recommended to take both.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Gain awareness of how thoughts and feelings impact an interpersonal situation
  • Recognize “conflict traps” that may hinder progress in moving toward a collaborative solution
  • Use a Conversation Planner to thoughtfully prepare for a difficult conversation
  • Apply active listening skills to reduce defensiveness and engage in perspective-taking
  • Identify appropriate next steps following a difficult conversation
