Course Description

A solid foundation in Human Resource competencies can help organizations avoid costly mistakes in compliance, employee relations, and performance management.  

HR Fundamentals is designed for individuals new to Human Resources or whose primary expertise is in another field (such as operations or accounting). The class offers an introduction to essential HR topics, including employee engagement, employee discipline, wage and hour laws, leave laws, records management, and workplace harassment prevention. 

Note: This class covers compliance topics for organizations with employees located in Washington State.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the fundamental laws that apply to non-exempt employees
  • Recognize and prevent harassment and discrimination in the workplace
  • Determine which laws apply to a given leave of absence and the steps employers must take to fulfill legal obligations
  • Properly maintain, keep, and dispose of required HR records
  • Discuss employee performance management systems
  • Define and drive employee engagement at work
